Can I Get Dental Implants If I’m “of a Certain Age?”

If you’re an older adult, one of the harsh facts of life is some opportunities may have passed you by for good. Luckily, restoring your smile with dental implants isn’t necessarily one of them! There generally isn’t a specific upper age limit for receiving dental implants. What’s more important than your age is your oral health, jawbone, overall health, and ability to heal when determining whether implants are appropriate.

Age Isn’t the Only Consideration

Dental implants can be an option for older adults who have lost teeth due to decay, gum disease, injury, or other causes. Being in your 70s, 80s, or even beyond does not automatically rule out treatment.

Your dentist will evaluate your individual circumstances rather than basing the decision solely on your age. A comprehensive examination can help determine whether your mouth provides a suitable foundation for implants.

Healthy Gums and Bone Matter

Dental implants require adequate bone support because the implant is placed into the jawbone. Tooth loss can cause the jawbone to gradually deteriorate, which may leave some older adults without enough bone for conventional implant placement.

However, insufficient bone doesn’t necessarily mean implants are impossible. Depending on your situation, your dentist may recommend a bone graft or another procedure to improve the available support.

Healthy gums are also important. Active gum disease should generally be addressed before implant treatment because healthy tissues help provide a stable environment around the implant.

Overall Health is Important

Certain medical conditions and medications can affect healing, so your dentist will want to review your health history before treatment. However, this doesn’t mean that having a chronic health condition automatically prevents you from receiving implants.

Your dentist may work with your physician when necessary to determine whether implant treatment is appropriate and how your care should be planned. Tobacco use can also interfere with healing and increase the risk of implant complications, as can uncontrolled diabetes.

Dental Implants Can Benefit Seniors

For eligible older adults, dental implants can provide a stable way to replace missing teeth. They can support individual crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures, potentially improving chewing ability and making prosthetic teeth feel more secure.

Implant-supported dentures may be particularly appealing to seniors who have struggled with loose or uncomfortable traditional dentures.

There is no universal age at which someone becomes “too old” for dental implants. Instead, candidacy depends on factors such as bone and gum health, overall health, oral hygiene, and the ability to undergo treatment and maintain the implants afterward. A consultation with your dentist will provide definite answers on whether implants are possible for you!
